What makes people do what they do? And why? Psychology is the discipline that explores the infinite realm of the human mind and the interaction with everyday experience.

Garrett’s Psychology concentration is designed to introduce students to the fundamental knowledge, skills, and abilities required for success in the disciplines of psychology. This associate degree program exposes students to a wide range of psychology sub-fields in preparation for pursuit of higher degrees. Graduates of the program are well prepared to successfully transfer to psychology programs at four-year institutions, and be on track to enter at the appropriate level.

Career Opportunities

Garrett’s Psychology concentration equips students with the knowledge and prerequisites needed to transfer to four-year institutions and earn a bachelor’s degree in a variety of social sciences disciplines. Students who continue their studies and earn their bachelor degree find employment across multiple industries such as clinical care, criminal justice, political science, and law enforcement. Higher level masters and doctoral degrees lead to careers as psychologists, counselors, and therapists.

Students who choose to enter the workforce with their associate degree are well-prepared to work in a variety of professions where interpersonal interactions are a component of the work setting, as well as jobs such as mental health technician, therapeutic support services, law enforcement, and direct care worker.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will incorporate information literacy skills to locate, evaluate, and effectively use information needed to complete advanced coursework in social and behavioral sciences.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in verbal and written skills, particularly those skills that enhance the ability to structure, analyze, evaluate, and support an argument verbally and in writing related to completing advanced coursework in social and behavioral sciences.
  • Students will be able to interpret, compare, and contrast ideas within the context of the social and behavioral sciences.
  • Students will be able to identify, explain and apply the methods, techniques, and concepts used to understand the historical, theoretical, and contemporary issues relevant to the social and behavioral sciences.
  • Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and apply the research used in the social and behavioral sciences.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate cultural and global competency by being able to identify the impact of social, ethnic, economic, and gender variables for the purpose of understanding human behavior in a variety of social contexts inside and/or outside the United States.
